Established in 2002, Masjid Uthman Ibn Affan, better known as the Galveston Islamic Center (GIC), serves as a hub for comprehensive Islamic services and education to the people of Galveston. With our services, we aim to create a safe space for Muslims to practice their religion, teach others, and preserve the Islamic tradition in younger Muslims.
Galveston Islamic Center (GIC) is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It has no affiliation with any political or governmental body, and it is recognized by:
• The Islamic Society of North America
• The North American Islamic Trust, Inc.
• The Muslim Students’ Association of USA and Canada
The vision of GIC focuses on the belief that Islam is a religion of peace which emphasizes respect for other religions and faiths. This vision is derived from the cornerstone of Islamic directives that all human beings are equal, regardless of race or color. All ought to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect (Quran 49:13).
The mission of GIC is to promote and foster improved relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims through education and social activities related to Islamic civilization and culture. The center's activities generate opportunities for continuous dialogue and friendship among Muslims and between Muslims and non-Muslims to explore the essence and principles of the Islamic faith.
In accordance with this mission, GIC has established the following goals:
1. To provide Muslims with a place to practice their Islamic faith.
2. To teach, through classes, workshops and seminars, the principles of the Quran and other Islamic directives to all, with particular regard for children and young adult.
3. To develop a variety of religious and social activities that bring Muslim communities together to improve communication and understanding and to establish productive relationships.
4. To establish an intellectual environment for non-Muslims to understand the Islamic vision and its humanitarian values and history.
5. To demonstrate that Islam is a moderate religion that prohibits extreme behavior.
6. To develop programs in cooperation with universities, schools, institutions, and communities that present the dynamic role of Islam in confronting our common social and economic problems, such as the prospected program between GIC and UTMB on “Health and Religion”.
7. To provide ways and means for young people to exert their energy and time in productive activities.
8. To offer consultation and guidance for Muslims to live a compassionate life and secure a sound future.
9. To encourage young individuals to reform their skills to secure jobs and start prosperous careers.
10. To grant shelter, services and facilities to physically disadvantaged international patients who are under medical treatment in Galveston hospitals, through a program known as House of Othman.
11. To offer educational materials in various languages, through its library, to members of the community to facilitate knowledge and research on Islamic faith.
12. To make available to the community regular updates and events’ information about the center’s activities.
13. To regularly maintain and upgrade the buildings of Galveston Islamic Center and its masjid.
